Qatar Post launches a new remittance service to India based on the UPI payments system, offering migrant workers an easier, cheaper way to send money home and signalling a shift towards wider international use of India’s digital payment infrastructure.
Qatar Post has begun offering a new remittance channel to India that uses the same payments backbone as UPI, giving migrant workers and other residents another way to send money home through the postal network.
According to KNN, the Qatar-India postal remittance service, built on PosTransfer and powered by the Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform and NPCI International Payments Limited, went live in Qatar on August 15, 2026. Customers can walk into Qatar Post outlets, provide the recipient’s UPI ID and identification details, and send funds directly to a UPI-linked bank account in India.
The recipient must first enable foreign inward remittances in their UPI app before the money can be credited. KNN said transfers can be made for amounts from QAR 10 to QAR 4,000, subject to a cap of Rs 1 lakh per transaction, with a flat fee of QAR 15. Sandeep Kumar, India’s chargé d’affaires in Qatar, visited the Qatar Post outlet at LuLu Mall in Doha to mark the launch.
The service adds to a growing set of India-linked payment options in Qatar. Commercial Bank said in March 2023 that it was the first lender in the country to offer UPI remittances to India, allowing transfers using only a recipient’s UPI ID. Qatar National Bank later said it had partnered with NPCI International in February 2025 to enable QR-code-based UPI payments for merchants in Qatar, widening the reach of India’s payments system beyond remittances alone.
For India, the new postal corridor reflects a broader push to extend UPI beyond domestic use and into cross-border payments. KNN said India Post is already working with postal operators in other countries to open more PosTransfer-powered UPI remittance routes, a move that could make low-value transfers cheaper and more accessible for expatriate communities.
