Qatar Post has launched a new money transfer service connecting Qatar and India, leveraging the UPI platform for faster, more reliable cross-border remittances amid growing competition in the Gulf’s expatriate financial services market.
Qatar Post has launched a new money transfer service linking Qatar and India, opening another channel for remittances in one of the Gulf’s busiest expatriate corridors. The service was announced on August 15, the day India marks its Independence Day, and was developed with India Post and the Universal Postal Union, according to Qatar Post’s announcement.
The new offering uses PosTransfer, the postal sector’s international money transfer platform, with payments supported by India’s Unified Payments Interface, or UPI. In practical terms, that means customers in Qatar can send funds to recipients in India through a postal network that is being paired with a fast digital payments system, a model designed to make cross-border transfers simpler and more reliable for families sending money home.
The launch also fits into a wider push by postal operators to modernise financial services. Earlier this year, the Universal Postal Union said India Post had joined forces with the UPU and NPCI International Payments Ltd to connect UPI with the UPU’s interconnection platform, creating a system aimed at quicker, lower-cost international remittances for overseas Indians and small businesses. Qatar Post has said its own money transfer services are already built around speed, security and compliance, with transfers available through its branch network.
Competition in Qatar’s remittance market is also intensifying as banks and fintech groups expand their offerings. Qatar Islamic Bank recently introduced a direct remittance service to India through its mobile app, while Ooredoo Fintech has broadened its money transfer options through a partnership with Western Union. Against that backdrop, Qatar Post is positioning its new India corridor as part of a broader effort to give residents more choice, while strengthening financial links between Qatar and India.
