Nana Patekar, revered Indian actor, dies aged 75 in Goa after suspected cardiac arrest

Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar, known for his intense performances and numerous awards, has died at 75 in Goa following a suspected heart attack. His legacy spans five decades of Hindi and Marathi cinema, prompting widespread tributes and a state funeral in Maharashtra.

Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar has died at the age of 75 in Goa, after what reports described as a suspected cardiac arrest. He was found unconscious at his home in Dona Paula, near Panaji, and was later declared dead despite efforts to revive him, according to hospital accounts carried by Indian media. The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes for a performer whose career spanned nearly five decades across Hindi and Marathi cinema.

Patekar was widely admired for intense, closely observed performances in films and theatre, with his work earning him three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours. He made his film debut in Gaman in 1978 and went on to win acclaim for roles in titles such as Parinda, Krantiveer and Natsamrat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to his versatility and creativity, while Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar said Patekar would be accorded a state funeral in recognition of his contribution to Marathi theatre and cinema.

According to reports from Goa, Patekar had sent a message to a friend in the early hours saying he was feeling pain on his left side. A friend visited the apartment shortly afterwards, CPR was administered at home and he was then taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the early morning. A medico-legal case has been registered and a post-mortem is expected to establish the precise cause of death.

The death has cast a shadow over a day of business and startup announcements that YourStory was also tracking, including a partnership between Bureau and Zoomcar to strengthen user verification, a seed round for MoneyTruVa and expansion plans from Zelio E-Mobility in southern India. But it was the loss of Patekar, whose influence reached far beyond the screen, that dominated the day’s headlines.
