Jio Financial Services and Allianz move towards creating a disruptive insurance giant in India

Jio Financial Services and Allianz have formalised a 50:50 partnership to develop a larger, digitally-driven insurance business in India, aiming to expand accessibility and competitiveness in the sector.

Jio Financial Services and Allianz have moved a step closer to building a larger insurance business in India, signing a binding agreement for a 50:50 joint venture in general and health cover. The deal formalises a partnership first announced in July 2025 and comes after the two groups had already laid the groundwork with a separate reinsurance venture. According to Allianz, the new company is intended to begin operating once it clears the necessary statutory and regulatory approvals.

The planned insurer is designed to combine Jio Financial’s digital reach and distribution strength with Allianz’s underwriting, product and risk-management expertise. Allianz said the aim is to offer insurance products that are simpler, more accessible and better tailored to Indian households, entrepreneurs and businesses. The companies said the venture fits with India’s wider goal of “Insurance for All by 2047”, a long-term push to broaden protection in a market with a young population and a growing middle class.

The timing also reflects a broader reshaping of the sector. On April 22, Allianz and Jio Financial announced the primary insurance joint venture, and on May 13 Indian media reported that the new entity, Jio Allianz General Insurance Limited, had been formally launched. Allianz has been active in India since 2000, while Jio Financial has been expanding across lending, payments, insurance broking and asset management as it builds out a wider financial services platform.

The new venture could add a significant competitor to India’s general and health insurance market, especially if Jio’s digital ecosystem helps it scale quickly. Jio Financial and Allianz have also said they are working towards a separate binding agreement for life insurance, suggesting their ambitions in the country may extend across more of the insurance value chain.
