India’s UPI sets new milestone with over 145 billion transactions in first half of 2023

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continues to soar, handling a record 145 billion transactions in the first half of 2023, reflecting its deep integration into everyday life and expanding global footprint.

India’s home-grown digital payments network, Unified Payments Interface, has continued its rapid ascent, processing a record volume in the first half of the current financial year. Official figures released by the National Payments Corporation of India show that between April and September, UPI handled more than 145 billion transactions, up 27% from about 114 billion in the same period a year earlier. The system has become embedded in everyday life, used for everything from grocery bills and supermarket purchases to online shopping and person-to-person transfers.

The value flowing through the platform rose almost as quickly. According to NPCI data, total processed value reached ₹177 lakh crore in the April-to-September period, compared with ₹148 lakh crore a year earlier, a rise of about 20%. That works out at an average of more than 802 million successful UPI transactions a day, underlining the scale at which the network now operates.

September brought a modest pause in the pace of growth, but not a change in direction. Monthly transaction count slipped 1.8% from August to about 2,407 crore, while the value of transactions declined 1.5% to ₹29.37 lakh crore. Market watchers say that is consistent with seasonal variation rather than any weakening in underlying demand, and they expect activity to strengthen again through the festive period, when spending on retail and e-commerce typically rises ahead of Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath.

The latest figures also come as the digital payments ecosystem prepares for a change in merchant pricing rules. From 15 October, some UPI merchant payments above ₹2,000 are expected to attract a 0.4% merchant discount rate, although officials have said the charge will fall on merchants rather than customers. Person-to-person transfers and routine QR code payments at shops are expected to remain free for users. NPCI says more than 400 banks and over 200 fintech applications are connected to the UPI infrastructure, while the system’s reach has also expanded overseas, including in France, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Mauritius and Sri Lanka. That wider adoption has helped turn UPI into one of India’s most visible pieces of digital public infrastructure.
