India’s NPS moves into mobile payments with instant PhonePe and BHIM account opening

The NPS Tatkal facility lets eligible Indians open and fund a retirement account through PhonePe or BHIM UPI, with the regulator targeting up to 30 million new subscribers.

India’s pension regulator has expanded the National Pension System into a faster, more mobile-friendly product, with a new instant account-opening route now available through PhonePe and BHIM UPI. The move marks a further shift in the NPS from a scheme best known for government employees towards a broader retirement savings option for private-sector workers, business owners and others who want to start investing with minimal paperwork.

According to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, the NPS Tatkal facility went live on 6 October and is designed to let eligible users open and fund an account in a paperless process that can be completed in just a few steps. The regulator has said the service is aimed at making retirement saving simpler for everyday savers, and chairperson S. Ramann has suggested it could bring in 20 million to 30 million new subscribers over the next two years.

The process is straightforward, at least in theory. Users open the BHIM or PhonePe app, enter their details, choose a bank account and then make the first contribution through UPI. Once the account is created, a permanent retirement account number, or PRAN, is generated. The facility is available only to Indian citizens aged between 18 and 85, and the bank account linked to the app must already have e-KYC completed.

The minimum contribution depends on the type of account. For a tier-1 NPS account, the starting investment is ₹500. If a saver already has a tier-1 account and opens a tier-2 account, the minimum initial contribution falls to ₹250. That lower threshold is likely to matter for younger savers and informal-sector workers, who may prefer to start small and add money later.

For now, the feature is limited to customers of a small group of banks. Financial Express, LiveMint and Outlook Money reported that the facility is available to customers of State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and IDFC First Bank, while News18’s Hindi report also included Bank of Baroda and IndusInd Bank in its list. The differing bank lists suggest the rollout may still be evolving as the regulator and payment platforms broaden access.
