HSBC app update hints at possible Apple Pay expansion in India

A reference to Wallet support in HSBC India’s App Store listing has fuelled speculation that the bank could join Axis Bank as an Apple Pay card issuer, although neither company has confirmed the service is live.

An update to HSBC India’s app listing has prompted speculation that the bank may be preparing to support Apple Wallet, raising the possibility that HSBC could become the next card issuer to join Apple Pay in India. The App Store entry references Wallet support, but that alone does not prove the bank has switched the service on, and HSBC has not said publicly that its cards can already be added.

The interest comes only days after Apple officially introduced Apple Pay in India on September 30, 2026, with initial support limited to eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank. Apple said the service can be used on compatible iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches for payments in stores, apps and online, while Axis Bank said its cardholders could add their cards through its mobile banking app or Apple Wallet.

For users, the service is designed to make checkout quicker and more private. Apple says Apple Pay uses a device-specific account number rather than exposing the actual card number to merchants, and transactions can be approved with Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode depending on the device. Apple has also said Mac support is expected later.

Even so, HSBC customers should treat the App Store listing as a sign that wider support may be under consideration, not as confirmation that it is already available. Apple’s India support page still lists only Axis Bank cards, and the next meaningful step would be an announcement from HSBC or Apple confirming which cards, if any, will be eligible.
