The White House’s decision to designate India as a Tier 1 transshipment risk spotlights concerns over trade practices linked to China, amid ongoing diplomatic negotiations, while India honours Partition victims on a day of national reflection.
India’s trade relationship with the United States faced fresh scrutiny on Friday after the White House placed India in Tier 1 of its transshipment risk assessment, signalling closer monitoring of goods that may have originated in China before being exported onward. The move does not add new tariffs, but it does raise the pressure on country-of-origin claims at a time when New Delhi and Washington are still working towards a trade agreement. According to the Free Press Journal’s digest, the warning reflects India’s growing role as an export hub for China-linked goods and underlines the importance both sides attach to customs compliance.
The same daily roundup marked Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, with senior Union ministers paying tribute to the victims of the 1947 division of British India. Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, S Jaishankar and J P Nadda all used the occasion to remember the dead, the displaced and those who survived the violence and upheaval that accompanied the creation of India and Pakistan. Shah blamed Congress for the Partition, while the others stressed the need to draw lessons from history and strengthen social harmony, according to the report.
The remembrance also served as a reminder of the scale of the tragedy. India observes the day each year on 14 August to recall one of the largest mass migrations in modern history, when millions were uprooted amid communal violence and uncertainty. The broader significance of that memory was echoed in earlier tributes by Narendra Modi, who called Partition a tragic chapter in the nation’s history and urged Indians to remember the suffering in the hope of building unity and brotherhood.
