Unverified reports suggest Bank of America may acquire nearly 50% stake in Jio Financial subsidiary

Speculation circulates online about a potential $1.9 billion stake acquisition by Bank of America in a Jio Financial Services subsidiary, amid rising foreign investment in India’s financial sector, but no official confirmation has been made.

Bank of America is being linked online to a possible purchase of a 49.9% stake in a Jio Financial Services subsidiary for about $1.9 billion, but the claim remains unverified and has not been backed by any regulatory filing or formal company announcement. Given the size of the sum and the public nature of the firms involved, such a transaction would normally be expected to leave a clear documentary trail before it reached social media.

The speculation has emerged against a backdrop of rising foreign interest in India’s financial sector. Business Standard reported that State Bank of India and seven private lenders sold a 20% stake in Yes Bank to Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation in May 2025 in what was then the country’s largest cross-border banking deal, underscoring how global capital has been moving more aggressively into Indian finance.

Bank of America already has a commercial footprint around Jio Financial, but mainly in an advisory capacity. The bank has provided equity research coverage and helped arrange investor meetings, while Winnie Chen, its head of global payments solutions for Asia Pacific, said in October 2025 that the lender was investing heavily in its India payments business as demand grew for faster cross-border transfers. In June 2026, the bank also said it would launch a cross-border real-time payments service for corporate and institutional clients.

Jio Financial itself has been expanding quickly since its demerger from Reliance Industries in 2023. The company took full ownership of Jio Payments Bank in June 2025 after buying SBI’s remaining stake, operates a 50:50 asset management and wealth joint venture with BlackRock and began a reinsurance venture with Allianz in March 2026. That growth has kept the company in the middle of a broader wave of international dealmaking in India, with Economic Times data showing financial sector transactions of about $8 billion in the first nine months of 2025, up sharply from a year earlier.

Until there is a filing or official confirmation, however, the reported Bank of America-Jio Financial transaction should be treated as speculation rather than fact.
