India’s largest cement manufacturer, UltraTech Cement, announces plans to expand its electric truck fleet beyond 600 vehicles by 2026, aiming to significantly cut emissions and decarbonise its supply chain across multiple states.
UltraTech Cement plans to expand its electric truck fleet to more than 600 vehicles by the end of 2026, in a move that underscores how India’s largest cement makers are trying to cut emissions beyond the factory gate. According to the company, the trucks will be used in logistics operations across several states, moving clinker and other key materials as part of a wider push to decarbonise its supply chain.
The company has signed service contracts with Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion and Sany, alongside their subsidiaries and other logistics providers, to bring the fleet into service. UltraTech said the trucks will carry about five million tonnes of material a year across Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha. Industry summaries report that the shift could reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 117,000 tonnes and displace the equivalent of around 39 million litres of diesel each year.
KC Jhanwar, UltraTech’s managing director, said the company wanted to extend sustainability efforts beyond its plants and into transport. He said the move reflected a commitment to cut emissions across every part of the value chain and support the company’s net-zero目标. UltraTech said it was among the first in India to adopt greener logistics, starting with compressed natural gas trucks in 2021 and electric trucks in 2024. It now operates more than 850 vehicles in its green logistics fleet, while its electrification strategy covers mine-to-plant movement as well as transport between plants.
