Tamil Nadu accelerates industrial approvals with 21-day deadlines and new investment panel

The southern Indian state introduces a 21-day deadline for industrial project approvals and establishes a Tamil Nadu Investor Promotion Commission to boost large-scale investments and economic growth.

Tamil Nadu has set a 21-day time limit for approvals, licences and no-objection certificates for industrial projects, with applications to be treated as cleared if the state does not issue the required permissions within that window. Industries minister S. Keerthana said the move is intended to make the investment process faster and more predictable, while forcing the government to hold itself to a clear timetable.

The state is also setting up a Tamil Nadu Investor Promotion Commission, chaired by the chief secretary, to accelerate large projects involving more than ₹200 crore or at least 5,000 jobs. According to reports by Deccan Herald, The Hindu and Business Standard, the panel is part of a wider push to cut delays and improve coordination on major investments.

At the Vetri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026, Keerthana said the government had signed fresh memorandums of understanding for 97 projects worth ₹67,542 crore, expected to create more than 100,000 jobs. She said total investment commitments in the first 100 days of the administration had crossed ₹1 lakh crore, and described the inflow as a sign of confidence in the state’s industrial climate.

The government is looking beyond its traditional strengths and wants to attract more business in advanced manufacturing, electronics, semiconductors, life sciences, renewable energy, aerospace, research and development and global capability centres. Keerthana said the wider ambition is tied to Tamil Nadu’s goal of building a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036, with the benefits measured not just in output but in jobs, entrepreneurship and wider economic opportunity.
