The Reserve Bank of India has introduced a comprehensive overhaul of fixed-deposit rate-setting and disclosure norms, aiming to enhance clarity for depositors and provide banks with more flexibility on large deposits, effective from October 2026.
The Reserve Bank of India has overhauled the way fixed-deposit rates are set and disclosed, with the revised framework due to take effect on 1 October 2026. The changes are designed to make pricing clearer for depositors while giving lenders more room to adjust rates on large, or bulk, deposits, according to reporting by LiveMint and Goodreturns.
One of the main shifts is that banks will no longer be able to quote different rates for similar deposits accepted on the same day simply because the money was placed at different branches. Under the new approach, the interest rate on a bulk deposit must be the same across the bank’s branch network for deposits of the same size booked on the same date, which should make comparisons easier for customers.
Small finance banks face a stricter disclosure regime. They will have to publish deposit-rate schedules in advance and update their websites every business day at 10am for bulk deposits, with a short grace period until 10:10am for changes. At the same time, the RBI is allowing greater flexibility in pricing large deposits, meaning rates can still vary on bulk money depending on factors such as deposit stability and liquidity needs.
For ordinary savers, the practical effect is likely to be greater consistency rather than a dramatic change in returns. Industry reports say existing fixed deposits should generally continue on the terms agreed when they were opened, while the new framework will apply mainly to fresh deposits and renewals after the implementation date. Some reports also note that customers who believe a bank has not disclosed rates properly should be able to seek redress through the RBI’s complaint systems.
