Mumbai extends its lead as India’s top hub for family-run wealth, with 119 companies featured in the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India list, signalling ongoing growth and diversification beyond traditional centres.
Mumbai has strengthened its position as India’s leading centre for family-run wealth, with 119 companies from the city appearing in the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses list. That is 28 more than last year and underlines how firmly the financial capital remains at the heart of the country’s corporate landscape.
The Mumbai tally includes 95 names in the main list, up four from a year earlier, led by Reliance Industries. It also has 24 first-generation businesses, headed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, taking the city’s combined total across both categories to 119. Delhi’s National Capital Region remained in second place with 58 companies in the main list, down four, and 18 first-generation businesses, bringing its overall count to 76.
Kolkata held third place with 26 companies in the main list, followed by Pune on 20, Chennai on 17 and Bengaluru on 12. Ahmedabad and Hyderabad each had nine companies in the main list, while smaller centres also made their presence felt: Vadodara and Ludhiana had five each, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Thrissur each had three first-generation companies. The spread suggests that India’s family-business wealth is still concentrated in established hubs, but is also broadening beyond them.
