The proposed investment would give Petronas-owned Gentari fresh capital to expand renewable power, support joint ventures and pursue green hydrogen projects in India.
KKR is preparing to invest more than ₹6,000 crore in Gentari Renewable India, in a move that would deepen the private equity firm’s exposure to one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets. The plan, reported by Chemical Industry Digest and The Economic Times, would give the Malaysian energy group’s India unit fresh capital to expand renewable power projects and push further into green hydrogen.
The deal would bolster Gentari’s ability to build out a larger project pipeline, support its existing joint ventures and, according to The Economic Times, help with debt reduction as well. Gentari has been looking for a financial partner while it scales up in India, where long-term capital is still essential for developers trying to move projects from the planning stage to commercial operation.
Gentari has been steadily enlarging its footprint. Earlier this year, it bought a 1.6-gigawatt renewable energy portfolio from Brookfield, adding to its presence in the Indian market, according to the reports. Standard Chartered Bank has been advising Gentari on the search for a partner, while the company has also been pursuing collaboration through joint ventures and strategic tie-ups.
Those partnerships have included work with ReNew on solar and wind projects and with AM Green on green hydrogen and green ammonia, both of which are intended to support lower-emission industrial activity. Gentari’s parent, Petronas, has set out ambitions to install 30-40GW of renewable energy capacity and supply up to 1.2 million tonnes a year of clean hydrogen, underlining how the proposed KKR investment fits into a broader push across renewables, hydrogen and clean mobility. LiveMint has also reported that KKR is targeting several independent renewable assets in India through its Asia fund, suggesting the Gentari transaction is part of a wider strategy to build multiple clean energy platforms in the country.
