Jeff Dean-led startup Discovery Loop aims to redefine AI-driven scientific discovery with $10 billion valuation

Jeff Dean, former Google executive and renowned engineer, is spearheading Discovery Loop, a new AI startup set to automate scientific research, attracting significant investor interest amid a rising trend of ex-Google talent launching capital-intensive ventures.

Jeff Dean, the former Google executive and one of the company’s most celebrated engineers, is in talks to raise $1 billion for a new artificial intelligence venture at a valuation of about $10 billion, according to Business Insider. The startup, Discovery Loop, has quickly become one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched new companies after Dean left Google following 27 years there.

Discovery Loop says its aim is to automate machine learning, science and engineering in order to speed up discovery and progress. In a post on X, Dean described it as a public benefit corporation focused on running thousands of experiments in parallel, a pitch that places the company squarely in the race to use AI for scientific and industrial research rather than consumer chatbots.

The company’s initial funding round is said to be led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with support from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins and Doerr Capital. According to a press release dated August 5, Alphabet is a founding investor and cloud partner. The founding team also includes Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals, all former Google employees with deep experience in distributed computing, deep learning and large-scale AI systems.

Discovery Loop’s emergence reflects a broader trend in which senior Google AI figures are leaving to launch capital-intensive start-ups commanding eye-watering valuations. Business Insider noted that former DeepMind researcher David Silver raised $1.1 billion this year for Ineffable Intelligence at a $5.1 billion valuation, while other ex-Google researchers have also attracted major backing. Dean’s pitch deck, shared on X, has been described by one former Google product leader as exceptionally strong, underscoring how much investor enthusiasm remains for elite technical teams with long track records.
