India’s powerful family business dynasties expand their dominance with a combined worth of ₹42 lakh crore

India’s leading business families are amassing unprecedented wealth, with the Ambani family surpassing ₹25.8 lakh crore, signifying a surge in promoter influence and control over the economy’s top-tier enterprises.

India’s family-owned business dynasties are becoming larger and more influential, according to the latest Barclays Private Clients and Hurun India rankings, which put the combined wealth of the country’s three most valuable business families at ₹42 lakh crore as of June 2026.

That total, equivalent to about $444 billion, is said to account for roughly 9% of the market value of listed companies in India. The report also said the combined worth of the top three families rose by ₹1.57 lakh crore over the previous year, underlining how quickly promoter wealth has expanded.

Mukesh Ambani’s family remained in first place with an estimated ₹25.8 lakh crore, comfortably ahead of the Kumar Mangalam Birla family at ₹8.1 lakh crore and the Jindal family at ₹8 lakh crore. Business Standard’s coverage of the Barclays-Hurun rankings in 2025 similarly showed Reliance Industries at the top of India’s family business league table, reinforcing the scale of the Ambani group’s lead.

The broader picture is just as striking. The report said the top 10 business families together were worth ₹70.5 lakh crore in June 2026, up from ₹69 lakh crore a year earlier, while the threshold for entry into that group climbed to about ₹2.5 lakh crore. It also said the top 300 family businesses were valued at ₹138 lakh crore, a sum larger than the gross domestic product of several countries, including the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland.

Among first-generation business families, Gautam Adani’s family led the pack with a valuation of ₹19.57 lakh crore, followed by the Sunil Bharti Mittal family at ₹12.1 lakh crore and the Dilip Sanghvi family at ₹4.54 lakh crore. The report also noted that some long-established technology families slipped in the rankings, with the HCL and Wipro business families losing ground as their valuations fell.
