India’s forward deployed engineer roles surge as AI moves from pilots into operations

Job postings for forward deployed engineers rose nearly 19-fold in June year on year, reflecting growing demand for specialists who can embed AI and software directly into customer operations.

Demand for forward deployed engineers in India has accelerated sharply this year, with job postings rising nearly 19-fold in June compared with the same month a year earlier, according to a report cited by News18 and based on data from Indeed. The surge, which gathered pace from March, points to a role that is moving from niche to mainstream as companies look for engineers who can work directly with customers and turn technical systems into business results.

Indeed India managing director Sashi Kumar said the title may still be unfamiliar to many jobseekers, but the underlying need is straightforward: companies want engineers who can sit with clients, identify practical problems and make technology work in real-world settings. The scale of the increase, Kumar said, shows employers are moving quickly as they try to define the skills, duties and career prospects tied to the role.

Related reporting from LiveMint and The Indian Express suggests the hiring boom is being driven by a wider shortage of professionals who can bridge the gap between coding and deployment, particularly as artificial intelligence shifts from pilot projects to day-to-day use. LiveMint said the mismatch in India’s AI skills market has helped push salaries for these roles to between ₹32 lakh and ₹1.55 crore, while The Indian Express reported an average base pay of about ₹12 lakh a year. That spread underlines both the scarcity and the premium attached to the job.

The role itself is spreading across technology companies, consultancies, start-ups and specialised AI firms, with openings spanning enterprise AI, data engineering, workflow automation, infrastructure and healthcare, according to the Indeed-based report. The jobs are concentrated in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai, as well as remote positions, reinforcing the view that forward deployed engineers are becoming part of a broader shift in how software and AI are delivered to customers. Analysts quoted in other coverage said that, for many employers, the priority is no longer simply building tools, but embedding them in client operations where they can produce measurable outcomes.
