Indian financial sector undergoes rapid leadership reshuffle with key appointments in RBI, SEBI and major firms

The Indian financial sector experienced a significant week of senior-level movements, with multiple high-profile appointments across regulators, exchanges, and financial institutions, signalling a rapid shift in leadership across the industry.

India’s financial services sector saw another week of senior-level movement, with the Reserve Bank of India and the Securities and Exchange Board of India both adding to their leadership benches as firms from exchanges to mutual funds and insurers reshaped top roles. The changes point to a wider churn across banking, markets and financial infrastructure, with several appointments taking effect in August and October.

At the central bank, Monisha Chakraborty has been elevated to executive director. The Economic Times said the RBI had promoted five senior officers to executive director, including Chakraborty, as part of a broader reshuffle across key departments in Mumbai. The appointment adds to a string of senior moves at the central bank over the past year, including Sonali Sen Gupta’s earlier elevation to executive director in October 2025.

SEBI also named Prasanta Mahapatra as executive director, strengthening its senior team as the markets regulator continues to expand its oversight of listed companies and intermediaries. The appointment comes amid a period of leadership changes at the regulator, which has periodically moved senior officers into more specialised enforcement and market oversight roles.

Elsewhere, Vikas Goel took charge as managing director and chief executive of the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange on August 1, succeeding Arun Raste. At Muthoot Finance, the succession plan is more far-reaching: the company has recommended Alexander George as managing director from October 1, 2026, while current managing director George Alexander Muthoot moves to executive vice chairman. K.R. Bijimon has also been named chief executive, signalling a planned handover at the gold-loan lender.

The week’s changes were not confined to the public markets and regulated lenders. TransUnion CIBIL chief financial officer Amol Joshi has resigned after nearly five years, according to people familiar with the matter cited by ETBFSI, while InCred Capital named Abhinav Khanna as chief executive, capital markets. IDFC FIRST Bank promoted Pankaj Singh to chief human resources officer, and Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund appointed Madhu Nair as chief executive officer.

InsuranceDekho also joined the list, appointing Rohan Mittal as group chief financial officer with effect from August 2026. Taken together, the week underlined how quickly leadership tables are being reset across India’s financial sector, from regulators and exchanges to lenders, asset managers and fintech firms.
