India and Canada accelerate talks for comprehensive trade deal amid strained diplomatic relations

India and Canada are set to intensify their trade negotiations from October 5, aiming to finalise a comprehensive economic partnership by the end of the year amid efforts to restore robust commercial ties beyond diplomatic strains.

India and Canada are set to begin the next round of trade talks on October 5, in a fresh push to complete a long-discussed economic pact by the end of the year, according to remarks from Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu after his meeting with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee. Sidhu said the two sides were moving ahead after the fourth round of negotiations in Mumbai, signalling that the process is now entering a more intensive phase.

The latest talks come as both governments try to restore momentum to a relationship that has been strained diplomatically but is now being redirected towards commerce. The Economic Times reported that India and Canada have reaffirmed their strategic ties and are working towards a target of C$70 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, while also exploring the launch of investment treaty negotiations to deepen the economic framework between them.

Goyal has also indicated that the fifth round of negotiations will begin on October 5, with both countries aiming to complete the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of the year, according to The Economic Times. The negotiations are being fast-tracked as both sides look for practical gains in market access, investment flows and broader economic cooperation.

Canada is preparing to reinforce the diplomatic effort with a sizeable commercial delegation to India later this month. Sidhu said he will lead a Team Canada Trade Mission involving nearly 300 participants from businesses across key sectors, including critical minerals, energy, agriculture and technology. Mint reported that the fourth round of talks in Mumbai focused on areas such as clean energy, critical minerals and digital services, underscoring the breadth of the commercial agenda now under discussion.
