India aims to revolutionise its space industry with US collaboration and ambitious growth targets

India’s space sector is set to grow significantly, with policies supporting private firms and collaborations with the US, aiming to boost the market share from less than 2% to 10% in the coming years, underpinned by ambitious national programmes.

India’s space sector is being recast as one of the country’s fastest-growing industrial bets, with the US Department of Commerce saying its share of the global market could rise from less than 2% to 10% within five to seven years. The International Trade Administration, in an August aerospace and defence exporter alert, said the country is benefiting from policy reform, a larger role for private firms and deeper collaboration with the United States. It described India’s space industry as its “Market of the Month” and pointed to opportunities for American companies in satellites, spaceflight, connectivity, manufacturing and related technologies.

That optimism fits with India’s broader space ambitions. According to Industry and government figures cited by the India Brand Equity Foundation, the sector has expanded rapidly after opening to private participation and is now valued at about $8 billion. Jitendra Singh, India’s space minister, has said the aim is to raise that to $40 billion to $45 billion over the next eight to 10 years, supported by nearly 400 start-ups. Singh has also set out a long-term plan for the Bharatiya Antariksh Station by 2035 and a crewed lunar landing by 2040, underscoring how New Delhi sees space as both a strategic capability and a commercial growth engine. The US-India partnership in the field, which dates back to India’s first rocket launch in 1963, has recently been reinforced through the Civil Space Joint Working Group and the TRUST initiative launched in 2025, while a US commercial space mission to Bengaluru in February was described as successful.
