Adani Defence & Aerospace is rapidly scaling up ammunition production in Kanpur, investing over ₹3,000 crore to bolster India’s self-reliant defence industry and create thousands of jobs amid expanding strategic importance of the Uttar Pradesh defence corridor.
Uttar Pradesh is rapidly becoming a major centre for India’s defence manufacturing, and Kanpur is emerging as one of the state’s most strategically important industrial hubs. A fresh push from Adani Defence & Aerospace at its ammunition facility in the city is adding momentum to that shift, with the company expanding production, increasing automation and positioning the site as a larger part of the country’s push for self-reliance.
According to Adani Defence & Aerospace, it has opened two large facilities in Kanpur to make ammunition and missiles, covering 500 acres and involving investment of more than ₹3,000 crore. The company says the complex was built quickly after land allocation and is designed to support advanced manufacturing, including AI-driven quality checks.
The company says the project is expected to create more than 4,000 jobs and generate wider demand for small and medium-sized suppliers in the region. That local impact matters in Uttar Pradesh, where the defence corridor has already drawn investment proposals worth tens of thousands of crores, with Kanpur attracting the largest share, according to Business Standard.
In a separate account, TV9 Hindi reported that Adani is planning to expand its unit in the Hathipur area of Kanpur across about 250 acres, with about ₹2,000 crore more to be invested there. The report said the company had already invested about ₹4,000 crore in the city and was planning another ₹4,000 crore over the coming years. It also said the plant currently employs about 2,000 workers, both skilled and unskilled.
Production at the site is already rising. TV9 Hindi reported that the facility is making about 150 million rounds of ammunition a year and aims to double that to 300 million by the end of the year. The report said the plant produces small-calibre ammunition for rifles, large-calibre rounds for tanks and artillery, and is preparing to begin medium-calibre production by 2027.
The company is also targeting a major increase in grenade output. TV9 Hindi said Adani expects to reach an annual capacity of 4 million grenades by 2027 and add another 4 million units by 2029. That expansion, the company says, would further reduce import dependence and strengthen domestic supply chains.
Ashish Rajvanshi, chief executive of Adani Defence & Aerospace, said the need for greater self-reliance became more apparent during Operation Sindoor, when India could not assume that overseas support would arrive fast enough in a conflict scenario. He said that experience underlined the importance of building domestic capability in ammunition and other defence systems.
The company is also promoting the technical sophistication of the Kanpur site. According to the reports, it is using AI-based inspection systems to check ammunition cases against set standards and improve consistency. Officials said the plant’s products are built to NATO standards, which can help with interoperability and make them more attractive to friendly foreign customers.
