India’s auto sector experienced its strongest July performance on record, with significant growth across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers, signalling robust consumer confidence ahead of the festival season.
India’s auto industry recorded its strongest July performance on record, with broad-based gains across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The trade body said the surge points to firmer demand heading into the festival season, when vehicle purchases typically pick up.
Passenger vehicle dispatches from factories to dealers rose 34.3% year on year to 4.58 lakh units, up from 3.41 lakh a year earlier. Within that segment, utility vehicles remained the biggest category, but passenger cars grew faster, climbing 37.6% to 1.32 lakh units. Van sales also edged higher.
Two-wheeler sales showed similar strength. Motorcycles rose 20.7% to 10.74 lakh units, scooter sales climbed 23.7% to 7.98 lakh units and mopeds posted the sharpest increase in the category at 48.6%, reaching 50,497 units. Overall two-wheeler dispatches advanced 22.6% to 19.23 lakh units.
Three-wheeler sales rose 33.4% to 92,560 units, taking total domestic industry dispatches in the month to 33.71 lakh units. Exports also increased, rising 25.1% to 6.77 lakh units from 5.41 lakh a year earlier. SIAM director general Rajesh Menon said the industry had delivered its strongest-ever July sales and entered the festive period with expectations of healthy consumer sentiment.
