India’s central bank adopts cautious stance amid rising food inflation pressures

The Reserve Bank of India remains cautious as persistent food inflation pushes retail prices higher, complicating policy decisions and impacting household costs amid global uncertainties.

India’s central bank is likely to remain cautious after food inflation climbed again, keeping pressure on households and complicating the Reserve Bank of India’s next policy step. The lead article said retail food inflation rose to 5.52%, while Reuters reported that June food inflation in India had already accelerated to 5.32% from 4.78% a month earlier.

That persistence matters because food carries outsized weight in India’s consumer price basket and often sets the tone for broader inflation expectations. Reuters reported that overall retail inflation rose to 4.38% in June from 3.93% in May, moving above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target for the first time in 17 months. Economists have warned that patchy monsoon rains and supply constraints could keep vegetable, pulse and cereal prices firm in the months ahead.

The RBI, meanwhile, left its policy repo rate unchanged at 5.25% at its June review and kept a neutral stance, according to Reuters and the central bank’s own policy material. Business Standard said the decision reflected concern about global uncertainty, including tensions in West Asia, which could feed through to oil prices, inflation and growth.

For borrowers, the immediate result is a pause in lending-rate pressure. But if food prices stay elevated, the RBI may have less room to support growth later this year. Reuters reported that the central bank has shifted towards a more data-dependent approach, with markets now focused on whether inflation stays near target or broadens into a wider price shock.
