ICAI delays finalising 2027 CA Foundation exam timetable, urges early registration amid tight schedule

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has yet to announce the official timetable for the 2027 CA Foundation exam, with candidates advised to prepare early due to looming registration deadlines and a compact syllabus that demands precise planning.

India’s Chartered Accountancy Foundation exam remains the first major hurdle for aspiring chartered accountants, and for the 2027 cycle the key message is simple: the official timetable is still pending. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has not yet issued the final notification for every 2027 sitting, but its recent pattern suggests three attempts a year, with papers likely in January, May and September. ICAI usually publishes the date sheet and related instructions about 60 to 90 days before an exam window, so candidates are being urged to watch the official website closely.

That timing matters because registration and the exam form are separate steps, and missing either one can cost an attempt. ICAI requires students to enrol with the Board of Studies well before the exam month, which for a January 2027 sitting would likely mean a deadline around September 1, 2026, based on the usual four-month rule. The exam form is then filed later for each individual sitting, typically in the weeks before the papers begin.

The exam itself is the entry point to the CA course and is open to students who have passed Class 12 from a recognised board or are appearing for it, with provisional registration available in some cases after Class 10. The test comprises four papers worth 100 marks each, for a total of 400. Accounting and Business Laws are written papers, while Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics use objective questions with negative marking for wrong answers. Candidates must secure at least 40% in each paper and 50% overall to pass.

The syllabus remains focused on core foundation-level skills: accounting concepts, journal entries and final accounts in Paper 1; contract law, sale of goods, partnership and company law basics in Paper 2; ratios, algebra, statistics and logical reasoning in Paper 3; and demand, supply, cost concepts, money and banking in Paper 4. The structure is designed to test both writing ability and speed, which is why students often begin with the descriptive papers before turning to the multiple-choice sections.

For anyone aiming at January or May 2027, the practical advice is to register early, then spend the longest part of the preparation window on Accounting and Business Laws. Quantitative Aptitude and Economics can be layered in later, but the final fortnight should be reserved for revision and timed past-paper practice. In a syllabus this compact, the real risk is not complexity but delay: one missed form, one overlooked deadline, and the entire attempt can slip by several months.
