Senior officials from the GST Council have praised Andhra Pradesh for pioneering AI-based tax enforcement, which has coincided with significant rises in state GST collections and could influence national strategies.
Senior officials from the GST Council Secretariat have praised Andhra Pradesh’s use of artificial intelligence in tax administration, saying the state’s model could inform efforts by the Centre and other states to improve compliance and raise revenue.
According to the Deccan Chronicle, additional secretary Pankaj Kumar and joint secretary D.P. Mishra visited Andhra Pradesh on August 10 and 11 before meeting Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Vijayawada on Tuesday. They were shown live demonstrations by the Commercial Taxes Department of AI tools used in returns scrutiny, audit, inspection and legal case management. Officials also briefed them on AI-enabled dashboards and the use of GST data for real-time economic analysis as part of the state’s wider Real Time Governance push.
Naidu thanked the visitors and said Andhra Pradesh had long been a testing ground for technology-led change, from telecom and information technology to highways and now AI-driven governance. He said stronger support from the Centre and the Goods and Services Tax Network would help the state scale up systems designed to accelerate business activity while keeping revenue collection efficient.
The interest from GST officials comes as Andhra Pradesh reports stronger tax performance. The Times of India said commercial taxes collections rose 16% year on year in June, adding ₹664 crore to reach ₹4,829 crore, while net GST collections climbed 21.35% to ₹3,144 crore. The state also posted its highest monthly IGST settlement at ₹1,898 crore, up 39% from a year earlier.
Moneycontrol reported that Andhra Pradesh had already logged ₹5,542.7 crore in tax revenue in April, its highest monthly collection since GST was introduced, despite the pressure from GST 2.0 rate rationalisation, which the state said could cut annual revenue by about ₹8,000 crore. The New Indian Express later reported that first-quarter collections for FY27 rose 22.78% to ₹15,323 crore, with net GST receipts up 25.07% to ₹9,978 crore, suggesting that technology-led enforcement is becoming a central part of the state’s revenue strategy.
