Freshers in India are experiencing a modest boost in employment prospects in 2026, with increased recruitment interest in retail, e-commerce, and technology, amid evolving skill requirements and sector variations.
Freshers in India are finding a slightly stronger hiring climate this year, with new data suggesting that employers are becoming more open to graduate recruitment even as the pattern varies sharply by sector. On International Youth Day, the latest reporting on entry-level hiring points to a market that is improving overall, but not evenly, with some industries accelerating recruitment while others remain cautious.
TeamLease EdTech’s July-December 2026 Career Outlook Report says 75% of employers surveyed expect to hire freshers in the second half of 2026, up from 73% in the first half. The findings are based on responses from 1,097 companies collected between May and July 2026, showing a modest broadening of opportunities for new entrants to the labour market.
The strongest demand is coming from retail and e-commerce, alongside technology start-ups, where hiring intent stands at 93% each. Manufacturing follows at 89%, FMCG at 86% and travel and hospitality at 81%. By contrast, IT has eased to 76% from 81% in the first half of the year, while consulting, education, media and entertainment, marketing and advertising, and telecom have all seen softer fresher hiring plans.
The shift in demand is also visible in the kinds of roles companies are seeking to fill. TeamLease EdTech says some of the most sought-after positions include AI application developer, junior semiconductor design engineer, data centre operations associate, programmatic advertising associate and inventory and dispatch executive. Other roles in demand include cyber security analyst, full-stack developer, quick-commerce operations executive, digital media analyst, biomedical equipment technician, digital marketing executive, data research analyst, automation and control engineer, supply chain planner and GIS analyst.
Bengaluru remains the hottest city for fresher recruitment, with intent at 89%, followed by Mumbai at 75% and Chennai at 71%. Hyderabad stands at 60%, Delhi at 49% and Pune at 41%, and the report says all six major cities have recorded higher hiring intent in the second half of 2026 than in the first.
The broader message from employers is clear: a degree alone is no longer enough. Companies are looking for job-ready candidates with technical skills such as full-stack engineering, cloud security, business analysis, health technology, machine learning, big data, digital marketing and semiconductor design, along with softer traits such as responsibility, attention to detail, clear thinking, integrity and adaptability.
