Access Bank warns customers of rising fraud tactics exploiting promotional offers during holiday shopping

Access Bank advises customers to remain vigilant as scammers increasingly target online deals and discounts amid rising transaction volumes, highlighting new measures to combat financial crime.

Access Bank has warned customers to be alert to fraudsters exploiting promotional offers, shopping deals and digital payments as transaction volumes rise. The bank said people should never hand over one-time passwords, PINs, card verification values or card details in order to claim any offer, and it urged customers to verify suspicious messages only through official channels.

The alert comes as Nigerians rely more heavily on cards, online bookings and cross-border payments, especially during busy travel and shopping periods. Access Bank said scammers often pose as banks, retailers or other trusted brands and use fake discounts, gift cards or rewards to trick customers into revealing information that can be used to access accounts or approve unauthorised transactions.

For anyone who thinks their account details may have been compromised, the bank said customers can block access by dialling 901911# from any phone. It also pointed to Tamada, its 24-hour virtual assistant in the Access More app, as another route for help. In the bank’s December 2024 financial statement, Access Bank said actual fraud losses fell to N1.69 million from N6.15 billion a year earlier, underscoring how seriously lenders are treating the risk.
