A detailed breakdown of a Bengaluru professional’s monthly expenses of ₹1 lakh has ignited online discussions about the rising costs of living in India’s tech capital, highlighting the financial pressures faced by young city dwellers.
A Bengaluru professional’s detailed monthly budget has prompted fresh debate online about what it costs to live comfortably in one of India’s most expensive cities.
Ishita Chaudhary, who works at Rubrik, shared an Instagram video setting out expenses that she said come to about ₹1 lakh a month. Her list began with ₹21,000 in rent for a 3BHK flat, inclusive of maintenance, alongside smaller fixed outgoings of ₹500 each for furniture, an air purifier and Wi-Fi. Household costs included ₹7,000 for groceries, ₹2,000 for a cook and another ₹2,000 for a maid, according to the breakdown she posted.
Chaudhary said she also spends ₹3,000 on food deliveries, ₹5,000 on eating out, ₹5,000 on hobbies and ₹10,000 on getting around the city. That put her core monthly spending at about ₹56,500 before lifestyle costs were added. She listed ₹15,000 for shopping, ₹20,000 for travel, ₹5,000 for parlour visits and ₹3,000 for sports, bringing her total to roughly ₹1 lakh. She marked several work-related items, including office commuting, weekday lunches and breakfast, gym costs and snacks at work, as zero.
The post quickly drew a stream of amused replies, with some users joking that the budget left little room for savings. It is the latest in a run of social media posts in which young professionals have published their monthly expense sheets, reflecting wider fascination with Bengaluru’s rising living costs. Earlier examples have ranged from a 22-year-old corporate employee who said she spent ₹31,000 a month to another who put her total at ₹43,000, while a Google professional recently drew attention for reporting a February bill of ₹1.43 lakh after one-off costs were included.
