Aditya Birla Sun Life launches long-short equity funds targeting mid and small-cap segments

Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC introduces two specialised long-short equity funds, offering investors differentiated exposure to India’s mid and small-cap segments with dynamic risk management features amid evolving market conditions.

Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management Company has opened subscription to two specialised investment funds that use equity long-short strategies, giving investors access to different parts of India’s share market while allowing managers to vary their net exposure as conditions change. The Apex Equity Long-Short Fund and Apex Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund are open from August 10 to August 24, with a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh at the PAN level, subject to applicable rules, according to the fund house.

The first scheme, Apex Equity Long-Short Fund, is designed to cast a wide net across the market and will be benchmarked to the Nifty 500 TRI. Its approach allows the manager to build long positions in stocks expected to rise while trimming exposure or taking short positions where risks appear more pronounced, giving the portfolio more room to adapt across market cycles.

The second offer, Apex Equity Ex-Top 100 Long-Short Fund, is narrower and is aimed at companies ranked 101 to 500 by market capitalisation. In effect, it is a bet on the next layer of listed companies rather than the biggest names, with the fund house highlighting that firms in the 101-250 and 251-500 brackets have shown stronger market-cap growth over the past five years than the top 100. It also cited longer-run index data showing that the Nifty Midcap 150 TRI and Nifty Smallcap 250 TRI outpaced the Nifty 100 TRI over the same period, although past performance is no guide to future returns.

The long-short structure is what separates these schemes from standard equity funds. Instead of relying only on rising share prices, the manager can combine longs and shorts, use derivatives and adjust net market exposure in an attempt to manage risk and capture relative value. Even so, the strategy is not a shield against losses: short positions, leverage and more complex portfolio construction can raise the risk profile.

The two launches reflect a broader push by asset managers to offer differentiated equity strategies for investors willing to commit larger sums. Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC says earnings growth and stock selection should remain key drivers of returns in the second half of 2026, while domestic liquidity stays supportive and foreign investor participation has started to improve.
