Indian markets remain fragile amid global tensions and technical resistance levels

Indian benchmark indices are expected to open on a cautious note as ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and key technical levels keep traders on edge, with fears of deeper declines amid consolidation phase.

Indian markets are set for a softer start on Wednesday after both benchmark indices ended lower in the previous session, with traders watching whether tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to weigh on sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 112.10 points, or 0.46%, to 24,471.70 on Tuesday, while the Sensex slipped 388.19 points, or 0.49%, to 78,154.25. Global signals were mixed, with the Dow Jones and S&P 500 opening higher in the US but the Nasdaq ending weaker. GIFT Nifty futures were modestly higher late on Tuesday, pointing to a cautious open.

Technical analysts are now focusing on 24,385 to 24,350 as the key support band for the Nifty 50. Dhupesh Dhameja of SAMCO Securities said a clear move below the 200-day exponential moving average could deepen the decline towards 24,250 to 24,200. Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities said the 24,600 to 24,630 zone is the immediate resistance to watch, and that buyers would need a sustained breakout above that range to restore bullish momentum.

For Bank Nifty, the picture is similarly fragile. Dhameja said the index is testing its 50-day exponential moving average near 57,100, which has become an important support area. A break below that level could open the way to 56,500, while 57,500 to 57,700 has turned into an immediate supply zone. Shah said the 56,900 to 56,800 band, based on the 100-day exponential moving average, is another critical floor, and that a fall through 56,800 could drag the index towards 56,200.

On the upside, Shah said Bank Nifty would need to clear 57,900 to 58,000 to improve the tone. The broader message from recent market action is that both benchmark indices remain stuck in a consolidation phase, with traders selling into rallies and using moving averages as reference points for risk. That pattern mirrors earlier episodes in which Nifty struggled to hold gains near key psychological levels, underscoring how fragile sentiment can become when global cues and domestic technicals turn negative at the same time.
