India’s UPI expands globally, leading migration of QR payments across eight countries

India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is transitioning from a domestic triumph to an international platform, now enabling seamless QR-based payments in eight countries, poised to revolutionise cross-border transactions.

India’s Unified Payments Interface, better known as UPI, is moving from a domestic success story to a piece of exportable financial infrastructure, with official and industry reports showing its international footprint widening across eight countries. The system is now live in Bhutan, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates, giving Indian travellers and residents the ability to make QR-based payments abroad without foreign exchange friction or overseas card fees, according to NPCI International Payments.
