Telangana’s PM MITRA park lags in investment race as other states outpace it in textile revival

Despite allocating land and infrastructure for Telangana’s PM MITRA mega textile park in Warangal, the state trails behind other Indian states in attracting investment, highlighting uneven progress in the government-backed textile scheme.

Telangana’s PM MITRA mega textile park in Warangal has secured ₹3,800 crore in investment interest so far, leaving it behind several other states in the national race to attract textile manufacturing to the government-backed scheme, according to figures placed before the Lok Sabha.

Across the seven PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel parks approved by the Centre, investment interest has reached ₹68,590 crore, with Telangana accounting for only about 5.5% of the total. Madhya Pradesh is ahead with ₹19,846 crore, followed by Gujarat at ₹13,094 crore and Maharashtra at ₹12,000 crore. Uttar Pradesh has drawn ₹5,354 crore, while Tamil Nadu and Karnataka trail Telangana with ₹2,067.90 crore and ₹1,700 crore respectively.

The Warangal site has 1,020 acres available for the brownfield project, but the latest parliamentary data suggests that land alone has not translated into stronger investor demand. Telangana has completed 300 units of internal infrastructure work and has another 165 under way, while the state government has spent ₹123.93 crore on external infrastructure. Across all seven parks, the Centre has set aside a scheme outlay of ₹4,445 crore for 2021-22 to 2027-28, and detailed project reports worth ₹13,537 crore have been finalised.

The PM MITRA programme is designed to create large-scale textile clusters with shared infrastructure and is expected to support around 3 lakh jobs at each park, including 1 lakh direct and 2 lakh indirect jobs. The government has said the scheme is intended to strengthen India’s textile manufacturing base and improve export competitiveness, but the uneven spread of investment interest shows that some locations are moving faster than others in attracting capital.
