Indian shares slide amid rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions

Indian equities declined on Tuesday as stronger crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical uncertainty put pressure on investor sentiment, with the Sensex and Nifty both falling amidst global and domestic market caution.

Indian shares opened weaker on Tuesday as investors reacted to firmer crude oil prices and renewed geopolitical unease, with the BSE Sensex dropping 428 points, or 0.54%, to 78,114 and the NSE Nifty falling 123 points, or 0.50%, to 24,460. InterGlobe Aviation, Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement, Bharti Airtel, Eternal and Bajaj Finance were among the early laggards, while Titan, HCL Tech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys traded higher.

Brent crude was hovering around $87.61 a barrel, keeping pressure on market sentiment even though the benchmark was marginally lower on the day. Traders remained focused on tensions linked to the Strait of Hormuz and the risk that any disruption to shipping could lift energy costs further. Reuters has previously reported that swings in oil prices can unsettle Indian equities because the country imports most of its crude, leaving airlines, transport, cement and other fuel-sensitive sectors exposed.

The broader mood also reflected caution in global markets. Asian shares were mixed, with South Korea’s KOSPI firmer but Hong Kong and Shanghai lower, while US equities ended the previous session in the red. In India, foreign institutional investors bought equities worth ₹1,974.76 crore on Monday, according to exchange data, but that support was not enough to offset the pressure from energy prices and external uncertainty.

Analysts said investors are likely to stay selective until fresh domestic or global triggers emerge, with corporate earnings now carrying more weight than broad market enthusiasm. That view fits with earlier market reactions this year: research from HSBC and SMIFS showed that sharp oil-driven sell-offs can quickly hit banking, auto and other rate-sensitive shares, even if long-term studies suggest crude does not move the Nifty in a simple or consistent way. The previous session had ended slightly higher, with the Sensex up 43.27 points to 78,542.44 and the Nifty up 13.15 points to 24,583.80.
