Coal India Limited has brought 200 MW of solar capacity into commercial operation at Khavda in Gujarat, taking another step in its effort to build a larger clean-energy business alongside its core coal operations. According to a regulatory filing dated August 7, the unit began commercial operation at 00:00 on August 8 and forms part of a broader 300 MW project at the site.
The filing, submitted to the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange by B. P. Dubey, executive director and compliance officer, said the project was disclosed under Indian market rules for listed companies. Khavda has become one of the country’s key renewable-energy zones, drawing large-scale solar development from several companies in recent years.
Industry reports said the commissioning lifts Coal India’s total installed solar capacity to 557 MW. The company also has a 25-year power purchase agreement with Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam for the Khavda project, underlining the long-term commercial framework behind the investment.
Coal India has been widening its renewable push well beyond Gujarat. Energetica India reported that the company is targeting 9.5 GW of renewable capacity by FY 2029-30 and has signed or won projects in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana, including solar developments and battery energy storage systems. That broader strategy suggests the Khavda commissioning is not an isolated project but part of a much larger diversification plan.
