Investors can significantly boost their retirement corpus by increasing SIP contributions annually, aligning savings with income growth and inflation, but should consider market uncertainties and seek expert advice.
Retirement planning is easiest when it begins early, and mutual fund SIPs have become a common way for investors to build a corpus over decades. As living costs rise, life expectancy lengthens and financial responsibilities grow, a disciplined monthly investment can matter more than the size of the first contribution. Financial planners often point out that the longer the horizon, the more time compounding has to work and the less damaging short-term market swings can be.
NDTV Profit calculated that a flat SIP of Rs 25,000 a month for 25 years, assuming 12% annual returns, could grow to about Rs 4.7 crore. The same contribution, if increased by 10% each year through a step-up SIP, changes the picture sharply. Under that scenario, the invested amount rises to Rs 2,95,04,117 and the estimated corpus reaches Rs 10,68,88,652, with returns of Rs 7,73,84,534.
The appeal of the step-up approach is that it mirrors the way incomes often rise over time. Moneycontrol has noted that annual increases in SIP contributions, especially when linked to salary hikes, can help investors keep pace with inflation and strengthen retirement savings without creating immediate strain on monthly budgets. In practice, that makes the strategy more realistic for workers whose earnings are likely to climb over the course of their careers.
That said, mutual fund SIPs do not guarantee returns. Market conditions, economic shocks and the fund chosen can all affect the final outcome, even over long periods. Experts generally advise investors to treat step-up SIPs as one part of a wider retirement plan and to seek professional guidance before committing to a target corpus.
