UPI breaks 25 billion monthly transactions for the first time

India’s UPI processed 25.47 billion transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore in October, with daily volumes and values also reaching new highs.

India’s Unified Payments Interface continued to set records in October, with transaction volumes crossing 25 billion for the first time, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India and reported by ETBFSI. The platform processed 25.47 billion transactions worth ₹31.53 lakh crore during the month, up from 24.07 billion transactions in September and above the previous monthly high of 24.51 billion in August. On a year-on-year basis, volume growth reached 23%, while transaction value rose 16%.

The latest figures also point to a step-up in daily usage. ETBFSI reported that UPI handled an average of 822 million transactions a day in October, compared with 802 million in September, while average daily value climbed to ₹1,01,707 crore from ₹97,913 crore. A separate report by The Times of India said the October totals marked the first time UPI had crossed 25 billion transactions in a month, underlining how deeply the system has become embedded in everyday payments across India.

NPCI’s own UPI statistics page, which was accessible during this check, showed figures through September and had not yet displayed the October release. That official dataset listed 24,068.38 million transactions worth ₹29,37,396.67 crore for September, broadly matching the figures cited by ETBFSI for the previous month. The October numbers therefore appear to reflect a fresh update from NPCI, even though the live official page had not yet been refreshed when reviewed.

The broader retail payments picture was also firm. ETBFSI said FASTag processed 454 million transactions in October, while IMPS rose to 375 million transactions worth ₹7.63 lakh crore. AePS, by contrast, was softer on a yearly basis, with 102 million transactions and ₹25,555 crore in value. The mix suggests that while UPI remains the main growth engine for digital payments, other NPCI rails continue to show more uneven momentum.
