Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has called for an early conclusion of the proposed India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and urged CAF to explore project financing for Indian companies.
India is pressing ahead with talks on a broader trade and investment relationship with Chile, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging an early conclusion of the proposed India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement during a meeting with former Chilean president Eduardo Frei in New Delhi, according to the Ministry of Finance.
The ministry said Sitharaman met Frei, who serves as an ambassador on a special mission, alongside a Chilean delegation and representatives of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, known as CAF. The discussions centred on deepening economic cooperation between the two countries and widening the scope for collaboration with the regional lender.
Sitharaman also encouraged CAF to look at financing opportunities for projects involving Indian companies, particularly in critical minerals and renewable energy. According to the ministry, she pointed to CAF’s existing ties with the Confederation of Indian Industry and Export-Import Bank of India, while also calling for more avenues to support Indian firms through project financing. The ministry did not announce any new commitments or agreements.
The talks also touched on wider India-Latin America economic cooperation and investment prospects. Separately, the ministry said Sitharaman expressed concern over the recent floods in Chile. CAF’s website says the lender supports public and private sector projects across its shareholder countries, and recently pledged to allocate $40 billion over the next five years for sustainable growth and climate action, underscoring the scale of financing that could potentially be relevant to Indian companies seeking international capital.
