Completing an e-nomination, updating UAN and KYC details, and checking bank records can help salaried workers protect access to provident fund, pension and insurance benefits.
For millions of salaried workers in India, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation is more than a retirement piggy bank. According to Livemint, the EPF system can also provide employer-funded pension cover through the Employees’ Pension Scheme, family protection through the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance scheme, tax-efficient savings growth, and a measure of legal protection for the balance in some debt-related cases. That broader safety net is often overlooked because many members think of their provident fund only as a long-term savings account.
The most immediate step for workers is to complete e-nomination, the digital process that identifies who should receive EPF money, pension rights and insurance benefits if the member dies. Without a nominee recorded in the system, families can face delays and extra paperwork when trying to claim the provident fund balance, the monthly pension and the EDLI benefit. The news site News India Live says the process can be completed on the EPFO’s Unified Member Portal by entering family details, bank information and Aadhaar-linked authentication. In practice, that makes the difference between a relatively straightforward settlement and a claim that becomes tied up in administrative back-and-forth.
A second priority is keeping the Universal Account Number active and ensuring that know-your-customer details are correct. As LiveMint explains, the UAN is the portable identifier that follows a worker from job to job, and it must be linked to an updated mobile number and verified identity documents for online access to passbook services, withdrawals and claims. Even small mismatches in name spelling, date of birth or family details between EPFO records and Aadhaar or PAN can cause an application to be rejected. For many employees, this is the most common reason a claim stalls despite money having already been accumulated in the account.
The third key task is to keep bank details current, including the account status and IFSC code. Because EPF withdrawals, advances and pension payments are routed electronically, any inactive account or code change caused by a bank merger can stop the payment even after a claim is approved. News India Live also warns that workers who change jobs should ensure their previous employer records the date of exit and then transfer the old balance properly, so that service history is not broken. That matters not only for convenience, but also for pension eligibility and continuity of cover under the EPFO system. In a period when salaried workers are looking for dependable financial protection, these basic housekeeping steps can be as valuable as the contributions themselves.
