Employers have until 31 October to file September 2026 ECRs and pay PF contributions after the wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 part-way through the month.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has given employers until 31 October to file September’s electronic challan-cum-return and pay provident fund contributions, offering a short compliance reprieve after a mid-month change to the wage ceiling disrupted payroll calculations. Livemint reported that the extension adds 16 days for the September 2026 wage month only, and does not alter deadlines for other months.
The timing matters because September became a split month after the provident fund wage ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on 17 September. That means employers cannot simply apply one contribution rule across the whole month. Instead, they need to check which employees were covered before the revision, which became covered afterwards, and how wages should be treated for each period. Industry reporting has said the change created operational pressure as payroll systems had to be updated quickly, with some employers seeking more time to complete calculations and filings.
For employers, the practical priority is reconciliation: payroll records, employee eligibility, contribution bases and the employee-wise data uploaded in the return should all match. Employees, meanwhile, can use the extra time to review salary slips and their EPFO passbooks to make sure the amounts credited to their accounts are consistent with their pay and the applicable rules. Any mismatch should be taken up with the employer before the return is finalised.
The filing extension comes alongside a separate compliance window that remains open for certain provident fund trusts. The Ministry of Labour and Employment said on 13 October that eligible establishments can apply until 28 December under EPFO’s Amnesty Scheme 2026 to regularise exempt trust status retrospectively. According to the ministry, the scheme waives some of the usual requirements, including minimum employee strength, corpus size and the three-year compliance condition. That gives some employers two important dates to track: 31 October for September’s ECR filing and 28 December for amnesty applications.
