Employers now have until 31 October to submit September 2026 ECR filings and make statutory payments, following the rise in the mandatory EPF wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has given employers more time to file September 2026 payroll returns and make the related statutory payments, extending the deadline to 31 October from 15 October. The move gives businesses an extra 16 days to complete the Electronic Challan-cum-Return, the monthly filing used to report employee wages and provident fund-related contributions.
According to the EPFO, the extra time is meant to help employers adjust to a recent change in the mandatory wage ceiling for Employees’ Provident Fund coverage. The threshold was raised from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month, effective 17 September 2026, which means payroll teams must recalculate contributions and ensure the updated figures are reflected accurately in the September filing.
The ECR is more than a payment form. It is the return through which employers submit employee-wise wage details and contributions under the Employees’ Provident Fund, the Employees’ Pension Scheme and the Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme. Because the filing is linked to payroll records, even a small change in the wage ceiling can require organisations to update systems, review employee data and check contribution calculations before submitting the return.
The extension does not remove the underlying compliance obligation. Employers still have to file the return and pay the applicable contributions for the September wage month by 31 October, while continuing to meet the usual deadlines in later months. The change is therefore best seen as a procedural relief measure rather than a waiver.
