Reliance Jio has demonstrated smart glasses that scan merchant QR codes and initiate UPI payments through voice commands, alongside translation, note-taking and multilingual AI features.
Reliance Jio used India Mobile Congress 2026 to showcase a new batch of AI wearables, led by smart glasses that can initiate UPI payments through voice commands. In demonstrations described by Livemint and other technology outlets, the glasses were pointed at a merchant’s QR code, scanned it and then asked the wearer to confirm the transaction before sending the payment. The pitch is straightforward: reduce the number of steps needed to pay at a shop and move everyday digital transactions from a phone screen to a hands-free device.
The most attention-grabbing feature is the payment function, which Jio calls Scan & Pay. According to the company’s showcase, the camera-enabled glasses can read a UPI QR code while the user speaks an instruction to complete the purchase. Jio has also tied the feature to UPI Circle, which allows delegated payments of up to ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹15,000 a month under the network’s own rules. However, Livemint noted that Jio has not yet disclosed the authentication process, broader security details or the full technical set-up behind the system.
Beyond payments, Jio is positioning the glasses as part of a wider push into voice-first artificial intelligence. The devices were shown with support for multiple Indian languages, live translation, AI note-taking and live cricket commentary, according to the company’s presentation. Jio said the aim is to make AI more useful in ordinary life by letting people interact with digital services in their preferred language, without constantly reaching for a handset.
The broader wearables market has seen many smart glasses concepts, but Jio’s version stands out for focusing on local use cases that could matter to Indian consumers, especially UPI payments and language support. The Mobile Times reported that the glasses are expected to be priced below ₹15,000, although launch timing has not been confirmed. Other reports on the showcase said Jio displayed both audio-focused glasses and a camera-equipped model, underlining that the company is testing a range of formats rather than a single device. For now, the presentation offers a glimpse of where Jio thinks consumer wearables are headed: away from screens, and towards voice-driven AI that can handle simple tasks in the background.
