Indore woman loses Rs 4 lakh in latest bank scam exploiting official-sounding calls

A woman in Indore was deceived into transferring Rs 4 lakh after being falsely assured that officials were helping her redeem credit card points, highlighting rising cyber fraud tactics targeting bank customers.

A woman in Indore has lost about Rs 4 lakh after fraudsters allegedly posed as bank officials and lured her into believing they were helping her redeem credit card points, police said.

According to her complaint, she received a call from a person claiming to represent her bank. The caller told her that reward points linked to her credit card could be redeemed, then walked her through a series of steps that appeared routine but were part of the scam, investigators said.

Soon afterwards, money was taken from two of her bank accounts. She realised what had happened only after the withdrawals were complete and then approached the police, who have opened a case and begun tracing the flow of funds through the transaction trail.

Police in Indore have said they are collecting account details, payment records and information about those linked to the fraud. The case comes as cybercrime complaints continue despite repeated public warnings from local police not to share banking details, answer unknown calls or tap suspicious links. A similar fraud reported in Ahmedabad recently involved a fake bank official and a victim who lost more than Rs 4 lakh after being persuaded to follow instructions on his phone, underscoring how often scammers use official-sounding language and familiar banking processes to lower suspicion.
