Shares of PVR INOX leap following CLSA’s bullish outlook, citing recovering cinema attendance, rising customer spend, and strategic expansion efforts amid industry optimism.
PVR INOX shares climbed sharply on October 7 after CLSA reiterated a bullish view on the multiplex operator and set a target price of ₹2,135, implying upside of about 57% from the prevailing market level. Moneycontrol reported that the stock rose as investors responded to the brokerage’s belief that Indian cinema attendance is recovering, customers are spending more per visit and operating leverage is starting to lift margins.
The case for a stronger earnings rebound is being built on more than just ticket sales. CLSA pointed to a first-quarter performance in which admissions rose 8% from a year earlier, ticket revenue increased 15% and food-and-beverage revenue grew 13%, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation jumped 33%. According to the brokerage, the combination of rising audience numbers and higher spending per customer suggests a broader recovery in discretionary consumption, with multiplexes remaining a popular form of out-of-home entertainment in India.
CLSA also highlighted a relatively favourable backdrop for the industry. Industry reports cited by Moneycontrol and Business Today say India releases about 1,500 films a year, while demand is being supported by a stronger pipeline of Bollywood, Hollywood and regional titles. The brokerage argued that “OTT fatigue”, or viewer fatigue from streaming platforms, is helping draw audiences back to theatres, particularly for premium social and entertainment experiences outside the home.
The company is also trying to improve profitability by tightening costs. CLSA said PVR INOX is working to control utility, manpower, rental and food-and-beverage expenses while refining its concession mix to encourage higher spending in cinemas. The brokerage added that new screen additions and partnerships with property developers should help widen the company’s reach. Another report from Prabhudas Lilladher earlier this year also flagged PVR INOX’s move towards asset-light expansion through FOCO models, where franchise operators fund part of the rollout, as a way to preserve cash and improve capital efficiency.
The latest optimism follows a series of supportive broker calls. Prabhudas Lilladher had already maintained a positive stance in May, while Financial Express reported in September that CLSA saw a much larger upside after the company announced its first buyback and continued to strengthen its balance sheet. Airnews later reported that PVR INOX had added roughly 300 smart screens in smaller towns and had a net cash position after completing a ₹300 crore buyback, underscoring management’s focus on growth without stretching capital too far.
