India's RBI raises rates for first time in nearly four years, hints at further tightening

The Reserve Bank of India has increased its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points, marking a significant shift in policy after four years, with indications that additional hikes may follow amid rising inflation pressures.

The Reserve Bank of India has raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.5%, delivering its first increase in nearly four years and signalling that more tightening could follow. The move marks a clear shift in policy after the central bank changed its stance from neutral to “calibrated tightening”, as inflation pressure has started to build again.

According to reporting by The Week and the Economic Times, the central bank acted after consumer price inflation stayed above its 4% target for three consecutive months and reached 4.82% in August. The Monetary Policy Committee has also lifted its inflation forecast to 5.2% from 5%, reflecting concern that price pressures may prove more persistent than previously expected.

The Economic Times said the decision was driven by a mix of stronger-than-anticipated growth, the risk of higher crude prices, and softer agricultural output. Reports from KELO and NDTV added that the weaker rupee and elevated oil prices have also added to the case for action, with policymakers seeking to contain inflation without derailing economic momentum.

The rate increase also aligns India more closely with other central banks that have already moved to tighten policy in response to still-elevated inflation. Market expectations had already been adjusting to the possibility of a hike, and some analysts have been looking for further tightening in the months ahead if inflation remains sticky and external pressures continue.
