India Post’s recurring deposit scheme offers stability with flat 6.7% interest rate amid extended small savings rate freeze

India Post’s five-year recurring deposit scheme remains a safe and predictable investment option for families, offering a fixed 6.7% interest rate with added flexibility, despite the ongoing freeze on small savings rates.

India Post’s five-year recurring deposit scheme remains one of the more conservative ways for families to build a ring-fenced savings pot for a child’s education, school fees or other long-term goals. Backed by the sovereign guarantee, the account removes market risk from the equation and offers a fixed return to savers who prefer predictability over higher but uncertain gains.

According to India Post, the recurring deposit currently pays 6.7% a year, compounded quarterly. That means interest is added to the balance every three months, allowing the account to grow gradually over time. On a monthly deposit of ₹3,000 for 60 months, the total contribution would come to ₹1.80 lakh, and the maturity value would be about ₹2.14 lakh, including roughly ₹34,097 in interest.

The scheme is designed to be accessible. India Post says a recurring deposit can be opened with as little as ₹100 a month, with no upper limit on the amount saved. The account is normally held for five years, though it can be extended for another five years if the saver wants to continue. Upstox reported that the rate has stayed at 6.7% for the October-December 2026 quarter, after the Finance Ministry extended its freeze on small savings rates for a tenth straight quarter.

For parents opening the account in a child’s name, the rules depend on age. Children under 10 can hold the account through a parent or legal guardian, who will operate it on their behalf. Those aged 10 and above may run the account themselves and sign the application. Once the child turns 18, fresh know-your-customer paperwork and a new signature must be submitted so the account can be transferred fully into the young adult’s control.

To open the account, India Post requires the child’s birth certificate or Aadhaar card, along with the parent or guardian’s Aadhaar and PAN cards, two passport-sized photographs of the guardian and the RD application form. The account also carries extra flexibility. According to India Post, borrowers can take a loan of up to 50% of the balance after 12 instalments, at 2 percentage points above the RD rate. That feature, combined with the option to extend the plan, makes the scheme more adaptable than a simple locked savings pot.
