Nilesh Shah warns investors against chasing 'once-in-a-lifetime' opportunities amid market evolution

Nilesh Shah urges investors to focus on discipline and patience, cautioning against short-term FOMO as Indian markets become more dynamic and innovative.

Nilesh Shah has urged investors to resist the lure of deals pitched as rare, time-sensitive chances, warning that fear of missing out can push people into decisions based on urgency rather than judgement. Speaking in comments carried by Business Today, the managing director of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company said investors should not be persuaded by sales pitches that describe a product or theme as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

His central argument is that missing one investment is not the same as missing the market entirely. Shah compared the search for the perfect entry point to a train leaving the platform: if one service is missed, another will come along. That view fits with his wider message in recent interviews that investors should stay disciplined, keep a long-term horizon and avoid chasing short-term excitement in markets that can move quickly and unpredictably. Livemint reported that he has recently advocated a neutral stance on equities overall, with a willingness to add exposure when valuations become more attractive.

Shah’s remarks also reflect a broader change in how opportunities are being created across India’s markets. He noted that innovation is no longer confined to start-ups and privately held companies. According to Business Today, large listed companies are increasingly setting up separate units with dedicated teams and independent mandates to pursue new technologies and business lines in a more flexible way. Shah said this is helping blur the old divide between entrepreneurial firms and established corporations, meaning future growth opportunities may emerge from several parts of the market rather than a single segment.

That shift matters for investors because it widens the field, but it does not remove the need for restraint. LiveMint has quoted Shah warning against momentum trading in small- and mid-cap shares, and urging investors to pay attention to fundamentals, valuation and business quality rather than headlines. He has also said in earlier comments that market swings are likely to remain frequent, making a staggered approach to investing more sensible than betting heavily at a single point in time.

The broader theme of Shah’s comments is simple: patience can be more valuable than urgency. In his view, investors do not need to participate in every new market story to build wealth, and the idea that a single opportunity will never return is often overstated. As India’s private and public markets continue to evolve, Shah’s message is that discipline and selectivity matter more than chasing the latest narrative.
