Sensex plunges to six-month low as global headwinds intensify

The Indian stock market has experienced a sharp decline, with the Sensex reaching its lowest point in six months, losing approximately ₹17 lakh crore in investor wealth amid mounting global economic pressures.

Indian equities fell deeper into their recent slide on Monday, with the Sensex sinking to a six-month low and leaving investors facing another heavy erosion in paper wealth. Market reports said the index has dropped by about 5% over the past month, cutting roughly ₹17 lakh crore from investor holdings and underscoring how quickly sentiment has deteriorated as global headwinds intensify.

The latest decline left the benchmark at its weakest closing level since 30 March, according to the reporting by Daily Pioneer and Rediff, which said the Sensex closed at 72,771.72 after falling 1,124.02 points, or 1.52%. The Nifty also slipped to 22,780.25, a near six-month low. Other market reports, including DT Next, put the month’s loss in investor wealth at ₹17.17 lakh crore, while a separate update from 5paisa said listed firms on the BSE lost about ₹8.88 lakh crore in market value in a single session.

Analysts quoted in the lead report said the near-term tone remains defensive. Ankur Punj, managing director at Equirus Wealth, said the market’s underlying mood is likely to stay cautious, with a negative bias persisting in the near to medium term. Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, said elevated global bond yields and a stronger US dollar are adding pressure on emerging markets, potentially constraining foreign portfolio inflows and reducing appetite for risk.

Technical levels are now in focus as traders look for signs that the correction may be nearing a floor. Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking, identified 22,400 to 22,600 as an important support band for the Sensex, with 23,000 to 23,100 seen as an immediate hurdle and 23,400 as the next major resistance. For now, the broader message from market watchers is that global conditions, particularly crude prices, geopolitical uncertainty and tighter financial conditions, are likely to keep volatility elevated even as investors hunt selectively for stock-specific opportunities.
