South Korea launches campaign to combat AI-driven investment scams and misinformation

South Korean authorities have initiated a nationwide awareness drive to curb a surge in AI-enabled investment fraud, focusing on education and cautious verification to protect investors from false promises and scams.

South Korea’s financial authorities have launched a public awareness drive aimed at stopping a new wave of investment scams that use artificial intelligence, fake news and promises of high returns to lure victims. The Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service are backing the Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corporation’s “Safe Financial Life” campaign, which will be carried across government and financial-sector channels through the end of the year.

The campaign is a response to a growing pattern of fraud in which unlicensed operators and bogus investment promoters use AI to impersonate professionals, circulate false information and persuade people that they can earn quick profits with little or no risk. Regulators say these schemes often follow a familiar script: attract investors with claims of guaranteed principal and exceptional returns, then disappear with the money.

The advertisements are designed to show how that pressure works in everyday settings, such as cafés or casual conversations, where exaggerated success stories and confident recommendations can make risky offers seem credible. The authorities want viewers to pause, verify claims and seek advice from trusted institutions before making financial decisions. They are also urging people not to accept online tips or investment chatter at face value, especially when they are paired with urgency or certainty.

Alongside the media campaign, officials plan to expand financial education for teenagers and young adults, including soldiers and first-time workers, as interest in investing rises among younger Koreans. The broader aim is not just to prevent one-off scams but to build longer-term judgement around saving, investing and risk management. The campaign will appear on official websites and social media accounts, on public displays and through financial firms and industry associations.
