Innoviti’s AI backup system aims to cut UPI payment failures and prevent costly card transactions

Innoviti Technologies has launched an AI-driven backup system for UPI transactions, reducing failure rates at point of sale and helping retailers avoid higher-cost card payments, with potential savings exceeding Rs.2 crore annually.

Innoviti Technologies has launched an artificial intelligence-based backup system aimed at reducing failed UPI payments at the point of sale, a problem the company says can quietly push customers towards higher-cost card transactions. The Bengaluru-based payments firm said its new Innoviti Unipay tool is designed for organised retailers using UPI Dynamic QR codes, automatically shifting traffic to a healthier acquiring partner when the primary route starts to weaken.

According to the company, the system monitors acquirer performance in real time and reroutes payment requests within microseconds, without requiring any change to merchant systems or reconciliation workflows. Innoviti said the move is intended to stop a common checkout problem from becoming a margin drain, since card payments typically carry a merchant discount rate of about 90 to 150 basis points, while UPI is far cheaper for retailers to process.

The launch comes against the backdrop of growing pressure on merchants to keep digital payments flowing smoothly. Innoviti said that, in one pilot involving a hypermarket cohort, monthly UPI failure rates ran between 9% and 12.5%, and that the resulting impact on a 100-store chain with average tickets of Rs.3,000 translated into annual MDR costs of about Rs.2.6 crore. The company said the pilot reduced that impact by 90%, producing savings of more than Rs.2 crore a year.

Tariq Anwar, Innoviti’s chief systems architect, said the aim was to act before the failure reached the counter, rather than after staff or customers had already moved on to another payment method. Innoviti said the platform is now available to enterprise retailers using its acquiring stack, with no additional merchant-side integration required. The company has positioned Unipay as an enterprise payment platform for large retailers, with a wider focus on payment acceptance, reconciliation and settlement visibility.
