While the standard UPI transfer cap is ₹1 lakh, higher limits are available for specific transactions such as tax payments and IPOs, with additional restrictions imposed by banks and apps affecting actual transaction caps.
UPI users may assume a single ceiling applies to every payment, but the limits vary sharply depending on what is being paid for. According to ABP Live, the standard cap for routine transfers is generally ₹1 lakh per transaction, covering everyday uses such as shopping, utility bills and other common payments. For larger, category-specific transactions, however, the system allows much higher limits.
The biggest exceptions apply to tax payments, certain IPO applications and some essential services. Mint and Moneycontrol both report that UPI can be used for income tax and other eligible tax payments up to ₹5 lakh per transaction. The same higher ceiling is also available for IPO applications, hospital bills and educational fees, reflecting the government and National Payments Corporation of India’s effort to make high-value digital payments easier in sectors where card or cash use can be cumbersome.
Two other UPI products operate under separate rules. ABP Live said UPI Lite is designed for small-value spending, with a per-transaction limit of ₹1,000 and a wallet balance cap of ₹5,000. UPI 123Pay, which is aimed at feature phone users, allows transactions of up to ₹10,000. These products are meant to widen access rather than replace the standard app-based UPI system.
Even so, the headline limit set by the network is not always the limit a user will actually face. Mint and Moneycontrol note that banks and UPI apps can impose their own caps within the wider NPCI framework, meaning a customer may hit a lower ceiling depending on the bank, app or transaction type involved. For anyone making a larger payment, checking both the category limit and the individual bank limit is essential before sending the money.
